Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) and the Asan Mayor’s Office is pleased to announce the second mural this week will be unveiled on Thursday, July 15 at 10 a.m. in Asan.

The mural, located on Marine Corps Drive, south of the Harley Davidson and Isla Veterinary Clinic, marks the 10th to be unveiled under the “We Are Guam” village mural project.

“The uniqueness of this mural symbolizes the historical events which took place 66 years ago. It depicts the scenes before and after the landing of the military in Asan Bay during WWII. Starting from where the US Ships can be seen out in the horizon and eventually marking their successful conquest of the Japanese on Guam soil,” said Asan Mayor “Vicente “Benny” L. San Nicolas. “Our artist, Ariel Dimalanta, worked hard to portray what the people in the village endured - from their sufferings during the invasion when the Marines stormed the beaches of Asan and Agat to their triumph in the end.”

The historical significance of the village and its role in World War II makes it especially unique, said GVB Acting General Manager Ernie A. Galito.

“This mural really illustrates both the sorrow and happiness the people of Asan have experienced in their lifetimes,” Galito said. “We’re proud to present this mural to the people of Guam as a reminder of those who bravely gave the utmost sacrifice to re-instate freedom on the island.”

All paints and supplies have been contributed by Benson Hardware and the Mikel I.V. Tan Foundation.

Organizations and individuals are encouraged to contact their mayor to volunteer for their village mural project.
